Magnum photographer at the New York Times

Just in case anyone here missed it, Paolo Pellegrin of Magnum Photos has done some relly beautiful work for the Times recently in the 2.28.09 issue of the magazine – Oscar Issue: Great Performances. It’s a somewhat unusual approach to commissioned celebrity photography, and the results are lovely.

There were also some nice photos by Ryan McGinley in the 1.25.09 article – What Do Women Want?

The first couple of shots (of Kate Winslet) in the NYT portfolio made me think, “Oh, kack, the gimmick is to make them all look like crack whores.” But once I got further into the portfolio, I really liked it (except maybe for all the tilts, which struck me as a bit self-consciously Winogrand-esque.)
One thing I think is missing from a lot of fashion photography is context… so I really liked it that this portfolio made it clear WHY these people were dressing like this.

I think Kate look really amazing in those images, love the one with the red wall.
As to context, I think in a lot of fashion photo stories the context is simply someone’s imagination…apropos of nothing in particular. They are simply visual vignettes which hopefully evoke a mood, sell clothing, etc.
Indeed, there is bound to be more context when you approach the assignment like a photojournalism gig. Well done.
